WHAT IS A SNARE TRAP?
A brutal device made of wire. It tightens around the leg so that an elephant cannot move. Poachers use them to collect tusks from the bodies of the injured or deceased.
WHAT ARE THEIR TUSKS USED FOR?
Elephant tusks are made out of Ivory. This material is used to create Piano keys, handles, jewelry, statues and other decorative pieces. It fetches a high price - so greed encourages people to be cruel.
HOW CAN I HELP STOP THIS?
Wearing our jewelry gives you an excuse to strike up a conversation. Use it to spread awareness about what poachers are doing to these beautiful creatures!

THE SAD TRUTH ABOUT WIRE TRAPS
One of man's most inhumane inventions is the snare wire trap. Poachers set these traps to collect Ivory from the tusks of their victims.
When an Elephant is caught in a snare trap, his initial reaction is to panic and struggle to free himself. Unfortunately, this only makes it 10x worse...
Because of the way these traps are engineered, wire tightens around the leg until hitting bone. Tragically, the elephants are then left to suffer until they experience a slow and agonizing death. It is truly heartbreaking!
CONFISCATING TRAPS IS THE VITAL FIRST STEP
By removing these brutal wire traps from harms reach, we are able to greatly reduce the number of elephants they can injure per day.
Each confiscated trap is a huge victory for us, as it means another elephant's death has been prevented!
But in order to take it a step further, we decided to transform them into a powerful catalyst for saving them.
TURNING THE CRUELTY INTO BEAUTY
Matavita necklaces are not only fashion forward, but socially concious.
Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to collect traps from the wild and pass them on to be melted down into jewelry.
Each necklace is then dipped into plating to ensure that the color is uniform. This also allows us to offer a gold color, in addition to silver!
A LITTLE ABOUT US
Matavita is a team of 2 passionate hard-workers that hate seeing their favorite animal put through so much pain. What poachers are doing to the elephant population is tragic....
And believe it or not, we both used to feel helpless about it - as if nothing we did would make any difference.
That was until we realized that anyone could raise awareness about this cruelty. And what better way to do that than to turn something so cruel into something so beautiful! 💚 🕊️
With the help of many, our signature range of jewelry now funds the removal of snare traps in Africa. Hopefully, we can put a dramatic dent in the number of elephants killed each year.
Please note: We are not a Charity or Non-Profit organization. Therefore we do receive some compensation for selling our jewelry. This profit is used to grow our movement and is mainly spent on product development, advertising costs and spreading more awareness about the rapid elephant decline.
$15 from each Necklace sale does go towards the removal of traps, of course!
